It all starts with that tickle in your throat…

You know how the story goes. You are living life, just working, traveling, and socializing. Next thing you know, you get that feeling in your throat. Then comes the runny nose, coughing and sneezing. Then you are down for the count. In the bed with a stuffy nose, medicine and tissue by your bedside.

Anyone can get sick any time of the year. But wintertime is where we usually see an increase in this all too common scenario of cold and flu.  So what is one to do? Sure we can be reactive and nurse ourselves back to health. But how many of you have ever heard the saying “an ounce of prevention is better than the cure”? By taking a few simple steps, we can decrease our downtime or possibly avoid cold and flu all together.  Continue reading to find out ways to stay healthy this winter.

1. Wash your hands and dry off with disposable towels.

Think about how many things you touch throughout the day before you have a “need” to wash your hands. The flu virus can live on surfaces such as clothing, keyboards, and doorknobs for several hours. So it is important to wash your hands often using antibacterial soap. Keep hand sanitizer nearby when you can’t get to a sink.

2. Stay Away.

From sick people that is. The droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel a considerable distance. These droplets can wreak havoc on the healthy, thus weakening the immune system and making you more susceptible to getting sick.

3. Drink Water.

We all know that water has a multitude of benefits such as keeping skin clear and keeping one regular.  However, dehydration weakens the immune system.  So go ahead and pour yourself a glass of water. It will boost your immunity and flush out your system by ridding your body of all that can make you sick.

4. Eat Healthy.

Don’t depend solely on supplements that promise to boost your health. Make sure your diet is balanced. This means including colorful fruits and vegetables which are high in antioxidants. Also, include foods that are high in essential fatty acid, such as fish, to help ward off the common cold and flu.

5. Put A Lid On It.

Mom knew what she was talking about when she told you to wear a hat on your head. Most of our body heat escapes from the head. Don’t get tricked into complacency with a mild day sandwiched in between an otherwise brutally cold week. Keep your eye on the weather report to inform you when you should layer up and when you can take some of those layers off.

6. Get Some Fresh Air.

Even during the winter months, occasionally open the windows (or at least crack them). Doing so gives fresh air the chance to flow in and decrease the chance of airborne viruses making you their host.

7. Stop Stressing And Get Your Rest.

Your body restores itself when you get a good night’s rest. So be sure to get those 7-8 hours. This period of sleep can help your body fight off infection.

These are just a few of the many ways to stay healthy this winter. But what if after all of these precautions you still fall ill?  It happens to the best of us. Keep your chicken soup on hand, drink green tea, and explore the benefits of using raw garlic and echinacea in your daily routine.  If your symptoms last more that two days and are unresponsive to your over-the-counter medicines, see a doctor.
