Reason #9 to Vote Out Hare

Reason #9: Phil Hare voted for the
failed $787 billion stimulus.

The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the ninth reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #9 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Phil Hare voted for the failed $787 billion stimulus. In January of 2009, the Obama Administration promised that passing the economic stimulus bill would hold unemployment under 8%.

However, since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act became law, unemployment has shot up to 10.1 percent in Illinois and currently stands at 9.6 percent nationwide.

We were promised the stimulus would create between 3 and 4 million jobs. Since the stimulus passed, we have lost 2.7 million jobs.

Nearly 80 percent of the $2.2 billion in green energy grants within the stimulus have gone to foreign corporations, resulting in 6,000 jobs being shipped overseas.

Bobby Frederick, communications director for the Bobby Schilling campaign, said that the verdict is in, and the stimulus has failed.

“People in Illinois are still asking, ‘where are all the jobs?’ Twenty months and nearly $1 trillion later, it’s clear the stimulus was ineffective,” Frederick said. “We need a clean break from the policies of the past four years. Democrats proclaimed a ‘Recovery Summer‘ even though we lost 298,000 jobs during June, July and August. Despite this, Phil Hare still believes we’re ‘headed in the right direction.’ While our current elected leaders fail to recognize the true state of our economy, the people of Illinois have been paying attention. It’s time for a fresh start in Washington. It’s time to send the career politician packing and elect a small businessman to Congress. That is the change we need.”

The stimulus also contained some particularly wasteful expenditures, including:

Around $20 million spent for stimulus road signs. Congressman Hare even voted to block a proposal that would recoup this money and prevent further funds from being spent on these signs.
$22.3 million in payments were mailed to dead people or prison inmates.
$71,623 to study monkeys getting high on cocaine.

Poll Shows Schilling Up Seven

On October 21, 2010, in General, by edwardpan

The Hill: Schilling 45, Hare 38

The Hill has released a new poll showing Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, with a seven point lead over incumbent Democrat Phil Hare.

Bobby Frederick, communications director for the Bobby Schilling campaign, said this is great news.

“Once again, we have more evidence that Bobby Schilling’s pro-growth message is resonating with voters, while Phil Hare’s false and desperate attacks are falling on deaf ears,” Frederick said. “We will continue to work hard these last thirteen days taking nothing for granted. This race is still going to be a photo finish, but we believe we have the ground game, the message, and the momentum to emerge victorious on Election Day.”

From The Hill:

Rep. Phil Hare (D-Ill.) is in trouble. He ran unopposed in 2008, but this cycle he trails the GOP candidate, Tea Party favorite Bobby Schilling, by seven points – 38 percent to Schilling’s 45 – and 14 percent of likely voters are undecided, according to The Hill 2010 Midterm Election Poll.

Perhaps even more troubling, 50 percent of independent voters support Schilling, while only 29 percent support Hare. Also among independents, 45 percent had a negative view of Hare, while only 18 percent had a negative view of Schilling, who’s never run for office and owns a pizza restaurant.

President Obama carried this district, and 57 percent of independents gave the president low marks.

Meanwhile, Hare trails by 17 points among male voters, while he only leads by two points among female voters. Schilling has a 20-point lead among middle-aged voters. Hare wins younger and older voters by a small margin.

Meanwhile, 95 percent of Republicans said they definitely will vote, while 84 percent of Democrats said the same.

And 38 percent of voters said Obama has brought change to Washington “for the worse,” while 25 percent said it was “for the better” and 34 percent said nothing has changed.

The NRCC has spent about $341,000 in independent expenditures, while the DCCC has spent around $599,000.

The Hill poll was conducted by Penn Schoen Berland Oct. 12-14. The survey consisted of 417 phone interviews among likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percent.

Reason #8 to Vote Out Hare

On October 20, 2010, in 20 Reasons To Vote Against Hare, by edwardpan

Reason #8: Phil Hare’s campaign is
based on falsehoods.

The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the eighth reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #8 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Phil Hare’s campaign is based on falsehoods.

In a desperate attempt to avoid discussing his failed record, Phil Hare has focused his campaign’s message on attacking Bobby Schilling. He has released several advertisements that flat out lie about Schilling.

Four lies frequently told by Phil Hare:

Lie #1: Phil Hare says: “Schilling signed a pledge to protect tax breaks for corporations that send our jobs overseas.”

This is blatantly false. The Hare campaign cites the pledge Bobby Schilling signed with Americans for Tax Reform promising to oppose any tax increases. FactCheck.org and the AP have already debunked this claim. Nevertheless, Hare continues to tell known falsehoods hoping to mislead voters.

Lie #2: Phil Hare says: “Schilling will raise payroll taxes on Medicare and Social Security.”

While the Hare campaign misuses the Americans for Tax Reform pledge in Lie #1, they conveniently ignore it in Lie #2. Schilling signed the pledge for a reason: he doesn’t support any type of tax increase — including a tax increase on Medicare or Social Security.

Phil Hare again demonstrates his fluency in hypocrisy: he actually supports raising the cap on Social Security and Medicare taxes by 65%.

Lie #3: While on the campaign trail, Phil Hare has claimed Schilling supports privatizing Social Security and raising the retirement age.

Nothing could be further from the truth. According to Schilling’s issues section at his website: “I do not believe in privatizing Social Security, and I do not believe in raising the retirement age.”

Lie #4: Phil Hare says: “Schilling did not pay his taxes.”

Schilling released the following statement on October 8th, debunking this outrageous claim:

“I have always paid my taxes. Hare’s gross distortion of two outstanding business franchise filing fees with the Secretary of State’s Office from over 10 years ago reeks of desperation. Upon learning of the filings from the Secretary of State’s Office I immediately instructed my accountant to remedy the situation, and the filing fees for my business were properly handled in a timely manner. This issue has long ago been resolved, and my family and I are very proud of our restaurant business and the excellent reputation we have built with our friends and neighbors throughout Rock Island County.”

In short, the IRS was never involved, and the slanderous claim is blatantly false.

Communications director Bobby Frederick said that Americans deserve better than the misleading and desperate tactics of Congressman Phil Hare.

“Phil Hare’s dishonest tactics are exactly why Americans are sick and tired of politics,” Frederick said. “He needs to be taken to task every time he tells one of these tall tales on the campaign trail. When you are down in the polls and afraid to run on your record, the only thing left to do is deceive, and that is exactly what we are seeing from Phil Hare. Bobby Schilling’s campaign is focused on the issues that face our country, and I believe the people of Illinois will make that distinction on Election Day.”

Reason #7 to Vote Out Hare

On October 19, 2010, in 20 Reasons To Vote Against Hare, by edwardpan

Reason #7: Phil Hare helped
corrupt lobbyists secure millions of
dollars in earmarks.

The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the seventh reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #7 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Phil Hare helped corrupt lobbyists secure millions of dollars in earmarks.

According to Politico on 9/24:

“Former lobbyist Paul Magliochetti pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to illegally funneling more than $386,000 in corporate campaign contributions to lawmakers over a nearly six year period, a stunning fall from grace for one of Washington’s top influence peddlers.

“Magliochetti, a one-time high flying lobbyist and founder of the now-defunct PMA Group, could face as much as 15 years in prison and up to $1.7 million in fines after copping to three federal charges, although Magliochetti’s lawyers and Justice Department prosecutors will urge a sentence of between five and six-and-a-half years in federal prison.”

Phil Hare was very involved with Paul Magliochetti and the PMA Group. According to Congressional Quarterly, Hare helped secure $6.8 million in earmarks for Magliochetti’s clients. Hare also accepted a $1,500 donation from the PMA Group.

Communications director Bobby Frederick called Phil Hare’s involvement with Paul Magliochetti and the PMA Group “disturbing.”

“The public has a right to know the level of involvement between Phil Hare and convicted felon Paul Magliochetti,” Frederick said. “Democrats promised the ‘most honest, most open, and most ethical Congress in history,’ yet Phil Hare took money from a disgraced lobbying firm whose founder is headed to jail. We urge Congressman Hare to donate the tainted $1,500 contribution to a charity in the 17th District. This is the same old pay-to-play politics and Washington excess that fails to serve people in Illinois.”

This is not the first time Phil Hare has received tainted contributions. He previously accepted donations from embattled Congressman Charlie Rangel. Rangel was charged with 13 counts of various ethics violations this summer. Hare later donated the contributions to charity after a request from the Schilling campaign.

Reason #6 to Vote Out Hare

Reason #6: Phil Hare Voted to Send
Jobs Overseas.

The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the sixth reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #6 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Phil Hare is the only candidate in this race to actually send jobs overseas.

The $787 billion stimulus bill not only failed to hold unemployment rates below 8%, as the Obama Administration promised, it also managed to ship jobs overseas.

According to an ABC News Report, the stimulus bill has resulted in U.S. dollars going overseas to support foreign jobs. Russ Choma of the Investigative Reporting Workshop says that nearly 80 percent of the $2.2 billion in green energy grants within the stimulus have gone to foreign companies. In fact, it is estimated that this grant program in the stimulus has shipped 6,000 jobs overseas.

Communications director, Bobby Frederick, said that Phil Hare cannot hide from the facts.

“Phil Hare can spend all the money he wants on false ads, but the proof is in the voting record and Phil Hare is the only candidate in this contest to send American jobs to foreign countries,” said Frederick.

ABC News also reported that a wind farm in West Texas was slated to obtain a $450 million grant, even though most of the turbines would be made in China. A leading Democrat Senator even demanded that President Obama block the project, which would create up to 3,000 jobs in China. Frederick said the stimulus law, which Phil Hare voted for, lacked the necessary safeguards to protect American jobs.

“Democrats in Congress were successful in ramming this $787 billion, 400 page law through, but they failed to ensure that all the money would be spent in the United States,” Frederick said. “Sending career politicians like Phil Hare back to Congress ensures that Washington will always be broken. Phil Hare’s record of sending jobs overseas stands in stark contrast to the small business and job creation experience of Bobby Schilling.”

This morning the Politico just listed IL-17 as the #5 hottest race in the entire country. It is all due to your efforts.

National Review Online just reported on our positive momentum in fundraising with 15 days to go. Again, this is all due to the generosity of over 2,500 individual contributors who are ready for positive change.

Phil Hare has become so desperate that he has resorted to throwing mud and lies at our campaign, hoping to make something stick so he can distract the voters in the final two weeks of the election.

No surprise, but you just don’t see Phil Hare talking about health care being the big accomplishment that he is so proud of anymore. You also don’t see Hare talk about his support for the Cap and Trade national energy tax. And you don’t see Hare talking about the failed stimulus that sent jobs and debt overseas.

We are still the underdogs in this race, and we can win if we can get a final push over the finish line. Can you give a small contribution to the Schilling for Congress campaign today?

Reason #5 to Vote Out Hare

On October 17, 2010, in 20 Reasons To Vote Against Hare, by edwardpan

Reason #5: Phil Hare will not
protect your Second Amendment
rights.

The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the fifth reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #5 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Phil Hare will not protect your Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution clearly states that “…the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

However, Phil Hare voted against legislation that would restore the Second Amendment right to the people of Washington D.C.

H.R. 6842, the Second Amendment Enforcement Act, would allow law abiding citizens in Washington D.C. to defend themselves by repealing the requirement that guns be stored “unloaded and disassembled”. The measure would also permit D.C. residents to buy guns from licensed federal dealers in Virginia and Maryland. Phil Hare opposed this pro-gun legislation.

Bobby Schilling is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and was recently endorsed by the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF). Chris Cox, Chairman of the NRA-PVF, issued the following statement about the endorsement:

“The NRA-PVF is supporting Bobby Schilling because we know he will be a staunch defender of the Second Amendment freedoms of law-abiding gun owners, hunters and sportsmen in Illinois and across America. On November 2nd, I urge all Illinois NRA Members and gun owners in the 17th District to vote Bobby Schilling for Congress.”

Phil Hare, on the other hand, has received failing grades from both the NRA and Gun Owners of America.

Bobby Frederick, Communications Director for the Bobby Schilling campaign, highlighted the stark differences on this issue.

“The verdict is in, and Phil Hare has proven that he cannot be trusted when it comes to protecting our Second Amendment rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution,” said Frederick. “Voters have a clear choice on this issue on Election Day. Bobby Schilling will uphold our Second Amendment rights, not circumvent them.”
